What is Floorball
Floorball is a fast-paced indoor team sport played with lightweight plastic sticks and a perforated ball. Two teams of five players and a goalkeeper compete to score goals by shooting the ball into the opponent’s net. The game is played on a rink with surrounding boards, typically in three periods, and emphasizes speed, passing, and positioning rather than physical contact, making it accessible and safe for a wide range of players.
History
Floorball originated in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a recreational activity using plastic sticks and balls, often played in schools. The modern version of the sport took shape in Sweden during the 1970s, where standardized rules were developed and organized competition began.
In 1986, the International Floorball Federation was established to govern the sport internationally. From there, floorball rapidly expanded across Europe—especially in Finland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic—and eventually to North America and Asia.
Today, floorball is played in over 80 countries, with world championships and growing recognition as an emerging global sport.
Benefits
Floorball is a fast, accessible sport that improves fitness, agility, and coordination while developing quick thinking and focus. It promotes teamwork and social connection, and its low-contact nature makes it a safer, easy-to-learn option for players of all ages.
